Anthony's take
By Anthony Martinez, The Leander Local · Updated June 2026
Wayback is the retro quick-serve chain, and the trouble is you never know which Wayback you are getting. On a good Sunday the burger came off the flat top fresh and cooked to order, the room was clean and inviting, and the staff was warm enough to make a laid-back lunch feel right. Cooked-to-order patties and milkshakes are the whole pitch, and when the kitchen is dialed in, the pitch lands.
But I gave this place too many chances and watched it fall apart. An $8 box deal ordered for 3:30 pickup did not hit my hands until 4:05, crammed into the smallest bag I have ever seen. Another night the wait dragged, the food did not justify the price, and I found a long dark hair halfway through the fries. Fresh-and-friendly one trip, slow-and-sloppy the next is not a gamble I keep making.
The Order
A cooked-to-order flat-top burger and a milkshake, on a day the kitchen is actually on.
⚠ Gotcha
Pickup times run badly late and consistency is a coin flip. I found a hair in my fries on one visit.
