By most accounts Wayback is the retro quick-serve chain where the trouble is you never know which Wayback you're getting. On a good Sunday, reviewers say the burger comes off the flat top fresh and cooked to order, the room clean and inviting, the staff warm enough to make a laid-back lunch feel right. Cooked-to-order patties and milkshakes are the whole pitch, and when the kitchen's dialed in, it lands. But people gave it too many chances and watched it fall apart: an $8 box deal ordered for 3:30 pickup not landing until 4:05 in the smallest bag imaginable, another night with a dragging wait, food not justifying the price, and a long dark hair halfway through the fries. Fresh-and-friendly one trip, slow-and-sloppy the next, the reviews say, isn't a gamble they keep making.
A flat-top burger that's great on its day? I'll roll the dice and hope I catch the good Wayback.
