La Tapatia is not trying to charm you with the room, and I respect that to my bones. The decor is worn cantina, no pretense, but the food comes out fast, fresh, and full of flavor in a space that is actually roomy. I had the 18oz steak special and it was a genuine steal, and the menudo was cooked exactly right, the kind that says somebody back there knows what they are doing. The horchata was clean and cold and the staff treated me like a regular.
This is a no-pretense local Mexican spot, not a place you take a first date to impress anybody. It is the place you go when you want honest food at honest prices and a frozen margarita that does not mess around. The mango-strawberry one is strong, so pace yourself. I drove out of Austin for it and would do it again.

The 18oz steak special, a bowl of menudo, and the mango-strawberry frozen margarita.
⚠ Gotcha
The room looks rough and runs dim. Come for the food and the value, not the ambiance.
