The word on La Tapatia Mexican Restaurant and Bar
Here's the word going around
I haven't put this worn-cantina kitchen to the test yet, so this is the diners' read, not mine.

By most accounts La Tapatia isn't trying to charm you with the room, and reviewers respect it: worn cantina decor, no pretense, but food that comes out fast, fresh, and full of flavor in a space that's actually roomy. Diners call the 18oz steak special a genuine steal and the menudo cooked exactly right, the kind that says somebody back there knows what they're doing, with clean cold horchata and staff who treat you like a regular.
This is a no-pretense local Mexican spot, the reviews say, not a first-date impress-anybody place. It's where you go for honest food at honest prices and a frozen margarita that doesn't mess around. The mango-strawberry one runs strong, so pace yourself. People report driving out of Austin for it and doing it again.
An 18oz steak special people drive out of Austin for? Worn decor and all, I'm in.
The Order
Reviewers point to the 18oz steak special, a bowl of menudo, and the mango-strawberry frozen margarita.
⚠ Gotcha
The room looks rough and runs dim, by several accounts. Come for the food and the value, not the ambiance.
That's the word on this one.
