By most accounts Golden Chick is the most slept-on fast food going. Reviewers say the chicken comes out hot and right, the sides actually taste like something, prices are fair, and it's consistent store to store, half the battle with a chain. The rolls draw secret-weapon talk, fresh, hot, soft, the kind people keep going back for, and dining in at Leander earns a free vanilla cone on the way out, which reviewers say feels like getting away with something.
Two gripes keep it honest: the switch to a one-compartment container means a spicy order bleeds onto the fries and roll and turns the bread gummy, and the catfish and fried okra ran bland for a few. Come for the bird and the rolls.
Slept-on fried chicken with a free cone chaser? I'm setting my alarm for that one.
