The word on Desi hangout

Here's the word going around

I haven't taken a morning under those trees yet, so this is the diners' read, not mine.

Anthony, The Leander Local · Last checked August 2026

By most accounts Desi Hangout sits in downtown Leander and the room sells you before the food does: real greenery, mature trees, seating tucked into all of it, a morning that feels like a small vacation. Reviewers say the fried rice comes out perfectly balanced, the noodles take you somewhere, and the puri potato curry with idli is a breakfast people would drive back for. A sister to Mama Bros in Pflugerville, and on a good day you feel that pedigree. But diners are honest about the dips: the paneer schezwan that used to sing now arrives muted, paneer with no real flavor in a drowning sauce, and the schezwan noodles tasted great but the chicken wasn't fresh, a problem no garnish fixes. The bones, reviewers agree, are excellent. The standard just can't be allowed to slip.

Breakfast curry under grown trees downtown is exactly the slow morning I'm chasing.

The Order

Reviewers point to the breakfast combo, puri potato curry with idli, and the fried rice. Those don't lie.

⚠ Gotcha

The paneer dishes have slid from their old standard, by several accounts. Stick to breakfast and the rice, and watch the chicken.

That's the word on this one.

Worth knowing

  • If you see a guy on the deck with a cart, and a pot of soup.. Don't even think about it, ORDER IT, I wish i could remember what it was called!!!

I love this place! There are a couple of food trucks, and the food is authentic, tasty, and AMAZING. There was a guy standing on the deck with a pot of soup and these little fried ball-shaped things. He cracked the top of one, poured some of the soup in, and it was absolutely incredible. I think I ate 10 of them!!!
