By most accounts Dau Sushi is the close-to-home spot people are glad exists, and Dau himself is the reason, the man preparing the rolls with friendliness pouring off the staff. Reviewers say the gyoza and rock shrimp both crush, the shaggy dog roll earns its reputation, the spicy rainbow comes clean and fresh, and the sashimi arrives beautifully cut with crispy textures stacked on the specialty rolls, presentation that looks like somebody cared.
Not everyone leaves singing. A few say the room can run quiet, the music skewing somber when they wanted livelier sushi-bar energy, and that other Austin spots edge it on the fish. But when the kitchen is on, the word goes, the food is delicious and Dau treats you like you're hanging out at a friend's place.
